Most people don’t fail at their goals because they lack motivation.
They fail because their identity never changed to match what they wanted to achieve.

In this episode, we’re talking about why 2026 is the year to stop setting goals that rely on willpower and start building goals that are rooted in who you’re becoming.

If you’ve ever set ambitious goals only to fall back into old patterns, this conversation will help you understand what’s actually missing and how to fix it.

In This Episode, You’ll Learn:

  • The critical difference between achievement goals and identity based goals
  • Why achievement goals alone often lead to burnout, inconsistency, and self-doubt
  • How identity drives behavior and why that matters more than motivation
  • How to use “I’m someone who…” statements to anchor new habits and decisions
  • Why becoming the right person matters more than chasing the right outcome

Choose one identity statement for 2026 and start practicing it daily.

Let your actions become evidence of who you’re becoming.

Welcome back to the Goal Getter Guide. I am Jen Laffin and today we're talking about a shift that has the power to change so much for your business and your life this next year. This episode is called 2026, the year of the Identity-Based Goal, and I want you to listen with an open mind because the way that most people set goals. Well, it's exactly why they fall off by February. Today I'm going to show you a different way to think about goal setting this next year. A way that builds consistency, resilience, and self-trust from the inside out. So let's dive in. Every December people make these really beautiful plans for the upcoming year. They map out their revenue targets, their habits, their routines, and then reality hits. Why? Because they're setting what I call achievement goals. Achievement goals are all about the outcome. Write a book, hit a hundred k, sign five. New clients lose 10 pounds. They're focused on what you want. The problem with achievement goals is that they don't require you to change who you are. They ask you to create a result without requiring an upgrade in your identity, and that's why they crumble the moment that life gets inconvenient. I wanna talk about the difference between identity goals and those achievement goals. So let's break this down. An achievement goal says I want X, Y, Z result. An identity goal says I want to become the kind of person who naturally creates that result. Can you see the difference? One depends on motivation and the other depends on alignment. Let me give you some more examples. Achievement says I want to write a book. Identity says I'm someone who writes every day. Achievement says you want to make consistent sales identity says, I'm someone who invites people to work with me. Achievement says I want to grow my audience. Identity says I am someone who shows up consistently. When you shift your identity, your behavior follows, and when your behavior follows, your results become inevitable. So why is 2026 the perfect year for identity goals? I wanna talk about why this year in particular really matters. People are tired. They're tired of trying harder. They're tired of forcing outcomes. They're tired of waking up in December, realizing that they are in the same exact place that they were in last January, 2026 is the year when people want more alignment, more simplicity. More integrity with themselves. It's a year where reinvention is not optional. It is necessary. And if you're someone who likes symbolism or numerology, here's something fun I wanted to share with you. When you add up the digits in the year 2026, so when you add up two plus zero, plus two plus six, you get the number 10, and if you were to add those digits. One plus zero. You get the number one in numerology. A one year represents a fresh start, a new beginning, planting seeds for your next nine year cycle. It's the year to define who you are becoming and where you're going. So if there ever was a year to adopt an identity based goal, this is it my friends. This is your reset, your reboot, your chance to have a clean. Page. Now, I'm not saying achievement goals are bad. They're not. They just can't stand on their own. Achievement goals give you direction, but identity goals, those give you fuel. So how do you build an identity based goal? Well, I want you to ask yourself one question. Who do I need to become for the results that I want to feel inevitable? Think about the habits that version of you has, the boundaries she holds the way she thinks, the way she shows up for her business. Your identity goal should feel powerful to you. It should feel a little stretchy, and it should be completely aligned with the future that you're building. One of my favorite tools for anchoring identity is the I'm someone who statement. These statements work because they create a mental shortcut that your brain can follow in real time. When you're faced with a decision, your identity speaks before your excuses can. So here are some examples that you can adopt if these work for you. I'm someone who follows through on what I say. I am someone who finishes what I start. I'm someone who does the uncomfortable work first. I'm someone who keeps promises to myself. I'm someone who takes action before I feel ready. I am someone who invests in support before I get stuck. Choose one or two that feel like a stretch and commit to them. When you say these daily, they start to guide your choices without you having to fight yourself. 2026 is not about trying harder. It's not about stacking more goals into your already heavy workload. It's about becoming the version of yourself who no longer negotiates with your success. It's about setting your identity. Practicing living into your identity and letting the results follow. Now, I will be taking next week off so there will not be a new podcast episode when I come back with you with the next episode on January 6th, I'm going to be sharing my 2026 identity goals with you and sharing what I'm doing differently this next year.
